Top 7 Reasons to Book a Winter Wedding at Art 634 in Jackson, Michigan
Winter weddings have become increasingly popular, offering a unique charm and romantic atmosphere. If you’re considering tying the knot during the colder months, here are the top 10 reasons why booking a winter wedding might be the perfect choice:
1. Stunning Winter Scenery
Winter offers a naturally breathtaking backdrop. Snowy landscapes, frosty trees, and serene skies create a magical and romantic atmosphere that can make your wedding photos truly unforgettable. Whether you’re outside on our large wrap around porch or inside our rustic chic venue, the winter setting adds charm and elegance to your special day.
2. Less Competition
Winter is an off-peak season for weddings, which means there’s often more availability for venues, vendors, and dates. With fewer weddings booking in the winter months, you’re more likely to get your dream date in our large venue at Art 634.
3. Availability of Seasonal Decor
Winter provides plenty of natural décor options, from evergreen branches and pinecones to snowflakes and rustic wooden accents. Plus, many florists and decorators offer winter-specific flowers, like poinsettias, amaryllis, and evergreens, which can enhance the seasonal theme and save you time sourcing décor.
4. Unique Photography Opportunities
Snow, soft winter light, and cozy indoor settings of brick walls, wide wood plank floors, and original art work create ideal conditions for stunning wedding photos. Whether you want breathtaking outdoor shots with snowflakes falling in our cobblestone lined courtyard or mural lined alley or you prefer intimate indoor portraits in a historic environment, winter weddings offer a variety of striking backdrops at Art 634.
5. Gorgeous Winter Fashion
Winter allows for fashion-forward bridal wear with luxurious fabrics like velvet, satin, and lace. Brides can embrace long-sleeve gowns, faux furs, and dramatic accessories, while grooms can opt for rich, warm suits with velvet or tweed. The season's styles bring a unique and sophisticated touch to your wedding look.
6. Unique Seasonal Cuisine and Drinks
Winter weddings provide an opportunity to serve comforting, seasonal dishes. Think hearty soups, roasted meats, and rich desserts. Hot drinks like mulled wine, spiked cider, or hot chocolate bars can add a cozy touch and make your reception even more memorable. We love our area caterers, and are full of suggestions if you need them.
7. Lower Travel Costs for Guests
While some guests may need to travel to attend your wedding, winter airfare and accommodation rates are often lower than during peak wedding season. This can make it more affordable for loved ones to attend your special day.
Artists for Hire for Your Next Event
There are so many ways to make events unforgettable with the simple addition of art! How about hiring a live painter to capture the moment as it unfolds? Or setting up an interactive mural that guests can contribute to? You could also have custom-designed invitations and decorations, unique centerpieces, and personalized party favors created by local artists. For a community event, consider organizing an art exhibition or even an art auction to support local talent. There are endless ways to infuse creativity into every celebration.
Hiring artists for live entertainment can add an unforgettable dimension to any event. Imagine having a band or solo musician play during a wedding ceremony, henna customized for every guest at a bridal shower, or a caricature artist providing personalized keepsakes at a birthday party. Performance artists, like dancers, magicians, or acrobats, can also create an engaging and dynamic atmosphere. By incorporating live entertainment, you not only support local artists but also create a unique, immersive experience that will leave a lasting impression on everyone involved.
If you would like to find a local artist to help elevate your next event, please let us know and we would love to help connect you!

Quirky Halloween Facts
Photo by Jennifer Savage at Creature Feature Photography.
Origins of Halloween: Halloween has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, a celebration marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.
Jack-o'-Lanterns: Originally, people carved turnips, not pumpkins, to create Jack-o'-Lanterns in Ireland and Scotland. Pumpkins became the go-to in America due to their abundance.
Bobbing for Apples: This popular game traces back to a Roman harvest festival honoring Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees.
Trick-or-Treating: The tradition of trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic practice of leaving food out to appease spirits who roamed the streets at night.
Haunted House Origins: Haunted attractions began to emerge during the Great Depression as a way for communities to provide safer, structured ways to celebrate Halloween.
Candy Corn: Candy corn was invented in the 1880s by George Renninger and was originally called "Chicken Feed."
Michael Myers Mask: The infamous mask from the movie "Halloween" is actually a Captain Kirk mask painted white, giving it that eerie, emotionless look.
Halloween is full of fascinating history, and we hope you enjoy celebrating old traditions, and creating new ones, this season!

Our Historic Building
Art 634 calls the historic building of The Jackson Wagon Company home, over 180 years later!
The Jackson Wagon Company, established in 1842 in Jackson, Michigan, quickly became renowned for its high-quality, durable wagons. The company's origins are closely tied to the Michigan State Prison, where it utilized prison labor to produce its wagons. This labor arrangement provided the company with a steady supply of workers and contributed to its success.
During the California Gold Rush of 1849, Jackson wagons gained a reputation for their strength and reliability, making them a popular choice for pioneers heading west2. The company's wagons were known for their ability to withstand harsh conditions and heavy loads, earning them the nickname "Wheels that Won the West".
One of the most famous stories involving a Jackson wagon is its use by P.T. Barnum for his circus1. In the early 1880s, Barnum contacted the company to build a wagon sturdy enough to carry Jumbo the Elephant, who could no longer walk in circus parades. The Jackson Wagon Company's skilled workers, including prison laborers, built a wagon that successfully transported Jumbo, allowing the beloved elephant to continue performing.
At its peak, the Jackson Wagon Company employed over 200 workers, with 120 of them being prisoners. By 1898, the company had produced over 5,000 wagons. However, the advent of automobiles in the early 20th century led to a decline in demand for wagons, and the company eventually folded around 1911.
Despite its closure, the legacy of The Jackson Wagon Company lives on. Its wagons are remembered for their durability and contribution to the westward expansion of the United States. The company's innovative use of prison labor and its role in supporting the circus industry are notable aspects of its history.
In honor of this diverse history, Art 634 has their annual Circus of Curiosities, which is a one-day adult circus showcasing performance artists from around the Midwest. Art 634 continues to fill the building with positivity and bright colors, growing the great spirit of innovation that has thrived here and rewriting the story of hardship held within the building’s history.
Michigan Fall Weddings - Ten Things to Consider!
Fall weddings also bring dark weddings to Art 634!
Fall in Michigan is a magical time of year, with vibrant foliage, crisp air, and an atmosphere that's perfect for romance. If you're planning a fall wedding at Art 634 or anywhere else in the Mitten State, there are a few key considerations to ensure your special day is both beautiful and memorable.
1. Embrace the Seasonal Beauty
Michigan's fall foliage provides a stunning backdrop for weddings. Choose a venue that highlights nature's beauty, The landscaped grounds of Art 634, including it’s annual sunflowers make the perfect backdrop. Outdoor ceremonies in The Courtyard are breathtaking with fall color, but be prepared for Plan B in inclement weather.
2. Weather Considerations
Fall weather in Michigan can be unpredictable. Be prepared for varying temperatures by advising your guests to dress in layers. Our venues are heated in cold weather, and outdoor space heaters are available for winter weddings. Providing cozy blankets or shawls, hot cider and cocoa, or a nice bonfire is a great way to warm guests and add to the ambiance.
3. Seasonal Decorations
Incorporate autumn elements into your wedding decor. Think pumpkins, gourds, fall leaves, earth tones, and rustic accents. Rich, warm colors like burgundy, gold, and deep green can enhance the seasonal feel. Included twinkle lights add a cozy and romantic touch to the wedding venue, and the art galleries create an added experience to any event.
4. Guest Comfort
For the bridal party, consider fabrics and styles that are comfortable in cooler weather. Long sleeves or heavier fabrics can be both stylish and practical. Don’t forget about appropriate footwear! Art 634 is historically located on a brick road with brick sidewalks, so comfortable footwear is essential, especially if your ceremony is outdoors where the ground might be damp or uneven.
5. Seasonal Menu
Take advantage of Michigan's fall harvest by incorporating seasonal ingredients into your menu. Think comfort foods like squash, apples, and root vegetables. A hot cider bar or a selection of hearty soups can be a delightful addition to your reception. If you are having your event with us, we can suggest great chefs in the area to fit any cuisine.
6. Capturing the Moment
Fall light is unique and can create stunning photographs. Schedule your ceremony to take advantage of the "golden hour" just before sunset for the best lighting. A skilled photographer will know how to make the most of the seasonal colors and natural light.
7. Floral Arrangements
Choose flowers that are in season and align with your color palette. Dahlias, sunflowers, and chrysanthemums are great options. Adding elements like berries, twigs, and leaves can tie your bouquets and centerpieces to the autumn theme. We know some amazing local florists who fit the vibe, just ask!
8. Local Considerations
Michigan has many local vendors who specialize in fall weddings. From florists and caterers to photographers and musicians, seek out those who understand the nuances of the season and can offer personalized advice. Don’t forget that you can also source local beer and wine as well as other locally made items such as pies, popcorn, or keepsakes.
9. Fall into Dessert
Did someone say pie? Dessert is the icing on the cake when getting in to the feel of fall. Pies, apple crumbles, pumpkin cheesecakes - dessert is a memorable way to leave your guests speechless. Whether it be locally baked treats or a recipe passed down for generations, “wedding cake” can take many different form.
10. Personalized Touches
Make your fall wedding uniquely yours with personal touches. Consider a s'mores station, a bonfire, or custom fall-themed favors like mini pies or caramel apples. These details will make your wedding memorable for both you and your guests.
Planning a fall wedding in Michigan can be a delightful experience with the right considerations. Embrace the season's beauty and charm, and your special day will be as magical as the vibrant autumn leaves.
