Dia de Los Muertos

(Day of the Dead)

Historical Context

The Day of the Dead is a major celebration in Mexico. Begun in Pre-Hispanic times as ancestor worship, the customs vary throughout Mexico and have been greatly influenced by the Roman Catholic Church. Many families believe that their deceased relatives come to visit on this day which coincides and blends with All Saints Day in the Christian tradition. For some this is a time to remember and honor those who have passed from this life to the next. This event, at Art 634, will include displays and exploration of the Mexican culture and some Day of the Dead traditions.

Getting Involved

Create a Retablo: A retablo is a painting of a religious nature often depicting a miraculous event in the life of the painter on a small piece of metal. We will supply an 8" x 10" piece of metal which may hang as is after painting, or you may make 3 dimensional. Finished size no larger than 12"W x 14"H x 3"D- must be ready to hang. A spiritual theme suggested but not required.

Create a Shrine: A shrine is a 3 dimensional work which depicts an object, usually a saint or religious figure. The shrine may be constructed of any material, freestanding, to be displayed on tabletops. The dimensions should be no larger than 18"W x 18"H x 18"D. Many shrines have doors that close over the work which are also decorated. Again, a spiritual theme is suggested but not required.
